May 2010 Meeting
Minutes of May 3, 2010
The May meeting was called to order by President Susan Mink.
Shawn Hoefer presented an excellent program on reproducing your art, specifically for the Art Guild web site. Shawn emphasized that the photographs we take have too many pixels for transmission in a usable format and in a reasonable amount of time. He advised using 800 x 600, which is the size in a .jpg file. He recommended two free programs for this, the simpler being picasa (picasa.com) and the more versatile, but more complex, gimp (gimp.com). He offered to help members do this if they have difficulty. He may be reached @ 870-269-6808.
After refreshments, the minutes of the April 5 meeting were read by Peg Hares and accepted after one correction. The financial report was given by Joyce Hubbard. Total income for April was $1,124.92. Total expenses were $800.69. The ending balance was $2,971.81. Mary Rivers gave a donation in memory of Charlotte Russell of $50. The scholarship fund now totals $366.69.
Dana Shaeffer announced programs for upcoming meetings.
- In June, Terry Van Orman will present a program on pricing and selling your art.
- In July, Ann Snyder will present a program on the history of collage.
- August program is still open.
- September will feature a presentation by Tom Weir, who is a scrimshaw artist.
A workshop is scheduled with Jim Engler on Plein Air Drawing on June 21-23. Minimal materials will be needed, only a sketch book, two pencils and a sharpie pen. The cost will be $100.00 and the class will be limited to 10-12 persons. He is a retired college professor.
Beginning in June, Kim McClellan will begin a 6 week course for young people. She will be discussing 6 different artists, teach drawing, some abstract and possibly some collage. Younger children will be in the morning from 9-12 and older children from 1-3 in the afternoon. It will be advertised in the local paper and on the public access cable channel. It was suggested that Kim contact the local school art teachers about this before the end of the school year. Cost will be $7, which includes the $2 utility fee. Some members said that they would be willing to donate some supplies. If you have any extra supplies lying around the house, you can bring them to the Paintin’ Place at the June meeting. We will have a location for these donated supplies. This will be a real benefit to those children who would like to come to the class but may not have funds to purchase the necessary supplies.
Mary Rice reported that sales at the Folk Center totaled $562.63. This is excellent, as April was a short month.
Sheri Chisholm reported the new hanging system at the Skillet Restaurant significantly improved our art display. The current exhibit will be taken down on May 11, and a new exhibit will be hung on May 12, thus giving the maintenance crew time to make some repairs. If you currently have a picture at the skillet and are unable to be there on May 11, please contact Sheri @ 870-591-6684 so you can make arrangements to retrieve your pictures. Sheri read a list of the artists who will be displaying on May 12.
Three new members were introduced, bringing our membership to 87 members.
Russ Wilhite brought some frames to sell. There are several different sizes and materials. He also has more frames at his home for sale. If you are interested, you may reach him at 870-269-9228.
Karen Jones announced art events upcoming in the Mountain Home Area. They include the Trout Festival in Cotter and the 41st annual Mountain Home Art Show. She had entry forms for the art show and has E-mailed members with the details.
Dana Shaeffer will chair the June meeting, as Susan Mink will be on vacation.
